Chlor-Clean 1.7g NaDCC Disinfection and Cleaning Tablets

In today’s world, the risk and impact of environmental bioburden in healthcare environments is a major concern for infection prevention and control. Several known Healthcare Associated Infection (HCAI) causing pathogens can persist on surfaces allowing them to serve as a reservoir of transmission and dissemination of HCAIs to patients. Effective cleaning and disinfection of these surfaces is therefore a major priority for the reduction of HCAIs and overall patient safety within healthcare institutions.

Chlorine based disinfectants incorporating Troclosene sodium (NaDCC) have been recommended for this purpose by the UK Department of Health and Public Health England in relation to Clostridioides difficile (formally Clostridium difficile) infection since 2009¹ in addition to the guidelines published by the Department of Health in 2007, recommending the use of ‘hypochlorite’ (or chlorine producing agent at 1,000 ppm available chlorine strength) with detergent during outbreaks of infection where the pathogen concerned survives in the environment.²

Unfortunately it is not always recognised that most detergents prevent chlorine working properly, hence the chlorine and detergent cannot be mixed together. When used separately the detergent residues must be washed off surfaces with clean fresh water before using the chlorine, thus a three-stage process is necessary. This is rarely done properly in the healthcare setting today due to time and cost pressures.

Cleaning and Disinfection in One Operation

Chlor-Clean Tablets, designed and developed by Guest Medical in the early 1990s, incorporate Troclosene sodium (NaDCC) with an anionic surfactant to allow for cleaning and disinfection of surfaces in healthcare environments with 1,000 ppm available chlorine strength, when diluted into solution as recommended.

By creating a new surfactant that will work with the chlorine we have produced a tablet that, once dissolved in water, not only reduces the time taken to perform the cleaning process but improves the efficiency of the disinfection at the same time. Troclosene sodium (NaDCC), the chemical shown by Wilcox et.al., (2007) to be more effective against C.difficilespores than hypochlorite, stating that “… the combined body of evidence suggests that dichloroisocyanurate (i.e., chlorine-release) germicides currently represent the optimum choice for the removal of C. difficile from healthcare environments.” ³

Chlor-Clean Tablets have proven through independent EN Standard testing carried out by UKAS accredited laboratories to have broad spectrum biocidal activity. Chlor-Clean Tablets are effective against viruses, yeasts, fungi, bacteria and spores (including C.difficile).
